It took a lot of guts to stand up to another country and then win. That being said, history is written by the winners, and I'm sure the 13 colonies and their rebellion go down in British history as a "and then we had the colonies, and then we didn't." Haha. Losers. Granted, Britain has much more significant pieces of history that are worth remembering as well I guess.
Anyway, I'd like to talk about something else - fireworks. Fireworks are fun. For like 30 seconds, if that, then they are done. Personal fireworks, that is. I hate them for that reason. They are definitely not the gift that keeps on giving. Sure they are pretty or exciting to light and set off...there's always the "escape" factor that adds to the excitement. But when you think about it, you pay a lot of money to see some fizzing and popping. And maybe lose an eye or blow your finger off if you're not careful. Which, I'd venture to say, most people aren't. I feel bad for the hospital staff around this time of year.
I must admit though, large production fireworks are quite spectacular. Every year where I grew up we'd go up to the bluff over the river and watch the fireworks that were shot off a barge. People would come out in their boats and just gather around the barge. This was all fine and dandy until one year one of the fireworks didn't quite make it up before it exploded, caught all the other fireworks on the barge on fire, and as you can imagine, a disaster ensued in which those people in the boats suffered a large fright and maybe a few burns. Haha. Not really funny.
And then things like this can happen:
