Well, of course. I am part of a book club. Actually two book clubs, but I would say that one of them is dormant. Anyway, for my book club we were supposed to read Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant. Now, seeing as how I never read books twice, I find it hard to justify buying a book when it is available at the library. (Or at B&N...if you read in the maternity section nobody bothers you...)
So, when I saw that the book was within the extensive Philadelphia Free Library system, being a member, I requested a hold. The book was due back Nov. 6. Plenty of time to read it before our meeting Nov. 19, especially since I had my week break from school over that time period.
I requested a hold and a pick up at the Central Library. The book was at the Independence Branch, but I didn't really think anything about length of time required to "transfer" the book. I should have. The book's status was "being transferred between libraries" for 2 WEEKS. 2 WEEKS!
Let's see, the Independence Branch is at 7th and Chestnut-ish area. The Central branch is 20th and the Parkway. At most that is 20 blocks. 2 miles. It appears as if the book moves 1 mile a week. I called a couple days into this "transfer" period, inquiring whether I could just pick it up wherever it was. Apparently not - it was in transit. But I just kept imagining the book hanging out on the corner of 12th and Arch or something, moving a block a day to the Central Library.
Book club meeting was Wednesday night. Thursday night I get the email notice that my book is ready to be picked up at the Central Library. I hope some homeless person on the street was able to enjoy a good bit of it while it was relaxing on 9th and Market or 19th and Vine, because nobody else has been able to read it for the last 2 weeks.
Ridiculous.
