Water features are useless and ridiculous. I'm specifically talking about two water features. There is one at Penn State, a little waterfall over some granite crap. And because Penn State is located in State College, PA, winter tends to last a long time. And because winter tends to last a long time, the water feature is turned off for a long time. I believe it is only on for July and August. Which leads me to question what my tuition money went towards - a water feature that works 2 out of the 12 months of the year? Give me a break. It is ridiculous, wasteful, and very ugly.
The second water feature is here at Drexel. Drexel basically revamped their entire "quad" area to make it uglier and less grassy. They tiled the whole quad and built up this mound of earth with granite seats on it. For no reason. They also added a triangular shaped water feature. It has about 20-30 little spouts that shoot water up in some unidentifiable pattern. The spouts have lights in the bottom of them so they can illuminate the water. Again in some unidentifiable pattern.
The biggest travesty of all is that somebody messed up with the drainage. All this water doesn't drain down the drains. It ends up on the stone block sidewalk, creating a nice green, slippery, moldy surface for pedestrians to walk on. Beautiful. A lawsuit waiting to happen.
So yes, #84 on my Things I Hate list is Water Features. Useless. Ridiculous. Dangerous. Wastes of money.

Agreed, with the notable exception of the dancing water in the Detroit airport. Have you seen that one?
I was just walking past that Drexel Water Feature today and I decided I want to run/walk through it some time this summer when it's REALLY hot and humid outside. I don't care who is around...WHO'S WITH ME!!!!!???
