The dumbest thing I've ever seen

The dumbest thing I think I've ever seen was Princeton's band. I went to the Princeton v Lehigh football game with my friends AB and BG last night. What a treat! Not only did we get to partake in some of the athlete tailgate activities (read: ate their food), but we got to experience the ultimate college football experience. Coming from a place like Penn State, I know good football when I see it. And it was clear those Princetonians really love their football team! Haha. I digress.

The most spectacular aspect of the evening, though, was Princeton's band. Dressed in classic orange/black plaid 70's suit jackets, hideous pants, and those stupid straw flat hats, Princeton's band is supposedly a satire.

Now when I think of satire, I think "This should be funny." But I also think satires should be well performed. I wouldn't call Princeton's band a satire. I would call it a circus. Without all the great things in a circus like elephants and trapeez and those motorcycles that go in circles in that cage.

This band was ridiculous. I'm no musician. Nor am I a band geek. But they sounded awful. Rather than making the joke, they were the joke. I was embarrassed for them.

In any event, Princeton pulled out a nailbiter, winning 10-7 with a last second field goal.

Speaking as a fighting hornet band alum, I will say that the main point of our super small school's marching band was to get the school to fund goofy uniforms, surround yourself with other goofballs for practice/performance, perhaps re-live former glory from high school, and dream up weird formations to execute...the music played was usually not good but super mildly entertaining (e.g. Roll Out the Barrel, Star Wars theme, We Will Rock You, Jungle Boogie, etc.)...however, unlike Princeton we had no pretensions of commentary/mockery...just silliness.

Dunno if that helps you, but it's been fun for me to think about that once again and sigh at the way my life has become...
