Pompeii must have been really pleasant before the eruption

Pompeii is amazing. Situated right in between Mt. Vesuvius and the sea, Pompeii has spectacular views of the water and mountains. Unfortunately, Vesuvius erupted in 79AD and the tons of ash and lava traveling at up to 80km/h completely engulfed the city.

What's cool about this, if you can get over the morbidity, is that the ash and lava preserved the entire city and its inhabitants almost perfectly. You can still see the wall paintings in people's houses and the tile mosaic floors and the columns and carvings and terracotta pots and ancient streets. The people themselves were pretty much killed immediately and preserved in a cast of ash. One of the most amazing sites I've ever seen!
