So my friend RH's brother BH teaches math at a high school in Philadelphia and every year he tries to have Math Career Day. RH invited a bunch of us to come out to the high school and talk to the math classes about how we use math in our jobs and our every day lives.
RH, being a statistician, has it easy! Her whole life is math ("I love numbers!"). I, on the other hand, now being in law school, have a little more difficult time making the connection between math and law. Nonetheless, I love numbers too and I love Math Career Day.
So RH and I, along with two of our friends LB and NV, talked to a bunch of high school classes about our relationship with math. I think I did a pretty good job, talking about how my future job as a lawyer won't necessarily involve crunching numbers or using actual equations, but I will have to know how to approach a problem analytically, analyze unknown variables (x factors like judges, juries, witnesses, the other side's lawyer), determine the probability of winning in court against the advantage of an instant settlement, and provide my client with a solution that best fits his or her needs. Creative I think, if I must say so myself.
The best part about math career day was getting the kids to participate and listen and be interested in applying math to their lives. The other good thing - it made me excited to have a career in law!
